Center for Personal Wellness Therapeutic Pool
Aquatic Therapy
"Wonderful." "Energizing." "Can't live without it." "Helps me cope with my pain."
Comments like these are being stated daily as people leave an aquatic exercise session at Baldwin Area Medical Center's Therapeutic Pool.
The water's healing properties improve muscle strength, endurance and flexibility with minimal impact on joints. Exercising in the pool improves balance, coordination and cardiorespiratory fitness while decreasing pain and stiffness.
The Aquatic Therapy programs are a series of progressive physical movements which use the water's buoyancy and resistance designed to be performed with or without aids for the individual client.
Water Massage
"I was floating on a cloud." "Sooooo....relaxing." "I didn't want this to end."
People dealing with fibromyalgia, chronic pain, arthritis, daily living stress, muscle and joint aches have all benefited from participating in a water massage.
The 89-degree water's buoyancy and viscosity properties provide support and resistance to achieve relaxation of the body and mind. The soothing music, warm water and air contribute to the ultimate of bodywork.
Communication between yourself and your water instructor before and occasionally during the session is necessary. Your water instructor will assist you in achieving your maximum range of motion while you focus on rhythmic breathing and allowing your body to release tension.
Before beginning a session, the instructor will outline the massage and answer any questions you may have; buoyancy aids (if used) such as collars and belts will be discussed, tried and fitted, and a liability form will need to be signed. To obtain the desired results, Bad Ragaz, Watsu, Jahara and/or other techniques may be utilized. Most movements are done while you are lying on the water's surface.
Water may enter the ear canal, so bring earplugs if this bothers you.
People with vestibular troubles, skin infections, chlorine allergy, incontinence or ear infection problems should not consider participating in this type of bodywork.
