 Diabetes Services Offered at BAMC
There is much evidence today that diabetes is on the rise, to over 21 million persons in the United States. There is also an estimated 54 million living with pre-diabetes.
DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT CLASSES
The Diabetes Self-Management Education classes offered by Baldwin Area Medical Center are designed to help a person with diabetes better understand and manage the disease. Input by physicians, nurse educators, dietitians and others trained in diabetes offer the tools, but the person with diabetes does the management of diabetes on a day-by-day basis. The education classes deal with understanding the process and treatments for diabetes. Learning about the prevention and control of complications is included. BAMC's Diabetes Self-Management Education Program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association. Classes for diabetes are offered on an individual or group basis. Medicare expects people with diabetes to have these classes. Diabetes education is an allowed Medicare benefit, and covered on many insurance plans. If you have not taken advantage of this benefit, discuss it with your physician provider. For any questions, call (715) 684-8675.
DIABETES PREVENTION CLASSES
“The application of preventative medicine techniques through early diagnostic testing and intervention could lengthen lives and lower health care costs when pre-diabetes is spotted.” - Elizabeth Thompson Beckley
Evidence is available to support the idea that we can actively prevent diabetes through lifestyle changes. Being proactive to stop diabetes is one of the healthiest moves one can make. To help put this into perspective, Diabetes Prevention classes are offered at BAMC. No prescription is needed; no insurance payment is expected. We keep the cost low - $20 per person for four hours of education provided by a registered dietitian and a certified diabetes educator. Classes are two hours per session and are run much like a community education class.
