Preventing Disease through Immunization
Each year, approximately 69,000 children are born in Wisconsin. Every one of these children will need 18-22 immunizations by age six to protect them from debilitating, life-threatening diseases. New vaccines are quickly becoming available, resulting in a complex childhood immunization schedule for a large population. Keeping track of families is another challenge for health care professionals. The average family relocates multiple times over the course of a lifetime, frequently leaving medical records and valuable immunization information behind. As many as 25% of children visit two or more providers for immunizations before their third birthday.

A top priority of the Wisconsin Immunization Program is the reduction and / or elimination of the number of vaccine-preventable diseases that affect children in our state. Children under two years old are especially vulnerable to vaccine preventable diseases and should receive most of their vaccinations prior to their second birthday. The appropriate use of immunizations is one way we can keep everyone in Wisconsin safer and healthier. Many children in Wisconsin receive immunizations from more than one provider. Without access to a child’s immunization information, it can be difficult to know which vaccine a child needs at any particular time. This can cause lapses in immunization, or unnecessary repeat immunizations. The WIR, created and maintained by the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services, provides a quick and easy solution to the problem.

The Wisconsin Immunization Registry electronically stores a child’s immunization record in a secure system. Health care providers can access the information to determine which, if any, immunizations are due at any given time. Parents and legal guardians can also access this information via the internet. Speak to your child’s health care provider about how to register to access the immunization record of your child.

What are the Benefits of the Wisconsin Immunization Registry?
The Wisconsin Immunization Registry (WIR) is a computerized Internet database application that was developed to record and track immunization dates of Wisconsin's children and adults, providing assistance for keeping everyone on track for his or her recommended immunizations. Statewide release occurred in May 2000. All demographic information for births occurring in Wisconsin were back loaded to January 1995 and continues to be downloaded on a weekly basis.

By keeping a record of the immunizations given, health care providers, parents and legal guardians know if and when a child had been given a vaccine. This helps with keeping children up-to-date on all needed vaccines.

Public Immunization Record Access gives people the ability to look up immunization records in the Wisconsin Immunization Registry. If you want to use this feature, you must perform a search for the record using first name, last name, date of birth, and one of either social security number or Medicaid ID.
The system looks for a record that matches all the data you have entered. It will display a list of immunizations the person has received. The system will also list the vaccines that the person currently needs.

It is possible that the system will be unable to find the record you are looking for. Please check the spelling and format of the data you have entered for each field.

If you are still having trouble, it may be because the social security number or Medicaid ID for the person has not been stored in the registry. Please contact your health care provider at the clinic or heath care facility that you go to for immunizations.
